Hip Osteoarthritis (OA) Symptoms & Pathologies
Hip osteoarthritis (OA) is inflammation of the hip joint typically found only after there has been substantial degeneration of the joint surfaces. Hip OA commonly results in decreased range of motion which is associated with decreased walking speed, decreased stride length, increased energy expenditure, pain, loss of function, and limitations in physical activity.
CausesHip OA is usually caused by a combination of factors. Although aging isstrongly associated with OA it does not cause OA nor should OA be considered a normal aging process. Trauma prior to adulthood may initiate a remodeling of bone that alters joint mechanics and nutrition that becomes problematic later in life. Repetitive movements has also been attributed to OA. Finally, obesity has been shown to be a risk factor for the development of OA later in life.
