Ken grew up in Hillsboro, Oregon and attended Hillsboro Senior High School. Enjoying a variety of sports, he played on the school soccer, alpine skiing and tennis teams. Summers were filled with hiking, cycling and golf. College took Ken South to Eugene where he received a Bachelor’s of Science in Physical Education at the University of Oregon. Ken continued at U of O and obtained his Master’s of Science in Physical Education in the areas of Adaptive Physical Education and Anatomy. Having worked with physical therapist in adaptive alpine ski, YMCA, Easter Seals, and Adaptive Health Club programs he went on to attend the Physical Therapy program at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Denver, where he received his Master’s of Science in Physical Therapy in 1992.
Although he finalized his career choice in college, exposure to the physical therapy profession started at a
very young age being that his father was a physical therapist. Interest in anatomy, biomechanics and the excitement in helping others to regain, improve and explore function solidified Ken’s decision to become a physical therapist. Ken completed internships at the Veterans Hospital, McKee Medical Center and Various Outpatient Clinics in Colorado. His final internship at the Shriners Hospital in Honolulu focused
on childrens orthopedics. He took a staff position with the regional medical center in Sterling, Colorado where the rehab emphasis was post surgical care of total joint replacements, rotator cuff repairs and general orthopedics. Missing the Northwest and his family, Ken returned in 1993. He practiced orthopedic physical therapy in the Greater Seattle region until 1999 when he began working exclusively in Redmond. Ken is an Orthopedic Certified Specialist (OCS) and is one of the Directors of Redmond Physical Therapy. He has been an orthopedic clinical instructor for numerous physical therapy students since 1997. He has maintained an interest and subspecialty in orthotics which has allowed him to work with many athletes including; recreational runners, marathoners, ultra-marathoners, tri-athletes and skiers.
Ken’s clinical approach is patient education focused. Each patient is a unique individual, with a different history, a different body type and a different goal. Therefore, various manual techniques, therapeutic exercises and modes of learning are utilized to obtain the fastest possible recovery. The ultimate goal is to empower the patient to take an active roll in their recovery, prevention of injury or improvement of athletic performance.
Outside of work, Ken enjoys spending time with family and participating in a variety of sports including soccer, tennis, golf, fly fishing, cycling and skiing. He was an alpine ski instructor working with the Bob
Hall Ski & Snowboard School at Stevens Pass from 1993-2003. Other interests include hiking, nature photography, glass blowing and landscape design.
