ShoeReview: Each treatment day patients ask and therapists recommend an array of different shoes. The differences are as varied as the individuals that enter our clinic. The footwear recommended will be determined by needs, pathology, and activity. It was suggested by several patients that if we should write a little review of what we see, wear, and experience in the clinic and when we are out putting our feet to work as well. Hopefully you will find the reviews and links helpful.

Ben's Shoe Review:

Brooks Beast

2003: Brooks Beast (click here): (women: Ariel): This shoe has an amazing amount of stability throughout the forefoot and heel counter and a durability 2nd to none. When worn with a prescription orthotic the Brooks Best is in my opinion has more stability than any other shoe on the market, probably just short of a hiking boot . I would recommend this shoe (Men's) for individuals over 160 lbs. This shoe has a great wear timeline. I ran in this shoe for roughly 7months (12-15 miles a week) with continued support/stability. I still use this shoe occaisionally for yardwork and walking on trails. For sprint workouts this shoe will feel clumbsy and heavy and may be discouraging, but will definitely not create nor promote any orthopedic dysfunction to the feet.

GEL-KAYANO® XI

2004: Asics Gel Kayano (Click Here): I initiated the Kayano on a rubberized track surface during coaching/running at RHS. The Kayano was slow to warm up to my foot as the toe box is a bit narrow for my foot, which is wide and flat. For individuals with a wider forefoot you may want to stretch the 5th metatarsal area (pinky-zone) with a golf ball when not wearing it as the rubbing in higher mileage individuals could create blistering. The shoe nicely accommodated my custom orthotic and provided ample control/stability for my height and weight. The Kayano in comparrison to the Beast is much more agile and aggressive in it's performance. The shoe feels as though it's ability to remain stable was significantly less than that of the Beast, approximately 4 months (15-20miles week, running only).

GEL-EVOLUTION™

2005: Asics Evolution (Click Here): The Asics Evolution previously was named the Gel Koji. The new name did not shake the greatness of this motion-control shoe. This is my favorite shoe that I have run in over the past 5 years. With the addition of the IGS (Impact Guidance System) the shoe offers amazing heel control at the point of impact. This is great for individuals who have a tendency to create peroneal soreness or easily get "shin-splints". The Evolution coupled with a custom orthotic has control that rivals the Brooks Beast but with a greater feeling of agility. The wear of the Evolution is improved in the EVA selection of the forefoot and heel when compared to it's sister shoe the Kayano.
